No More Whining!

From Jay Dickinson, via e-mail:

I am not a constant user of my tools. Lately, when I start my Mark V, I'm getting a high pitched whining noise. I tried oil. But, maybe I'm oiling in the wrong place. What locations would you recommend?

Without being able to inspect your MARK V first-hand, there are three possible problems:

1: The control and motor sheaves of your MARK V may require lubrication. Follow the guidelines outlined in your MARK V owner's manual. If you don't have a manual, you can order one through our on-line catalog. If your MARK V is a newer model 510 machine (with round rip fence/extension table tubes), order part # 845332 ($34.99) at our website. If you have an older MARK V Model 500 machine (with extruded aluminum rails for the rip fence and on the extension table), order part # 845435 ($15.99).

2: Your drive belt or Poly-V belt may be deteriorated or frayed and require replacement. I suggest that you call our Technical Services Hotline at 1-800-762-7555 to be sure you order the correct belt for your machine.

3: Your nylon drive & ring assembly (Part # 514083 -- $5.56). may have worn splines, which could allow it to rattle and possibly cause your whining. If none of these resolve your problem, you may need to call Technical Services (800-762-7555) to get some alternatives and possibly arrange to ship your headstock to us for a closer look.
